Project Description & Goals

The Strengthening Agriculture and Livelihoods for Women and Girls in Sudan (SALWA) project is a community-based resilience initiative implemented by Al-Rayan for Social Development (RSD) in partnership with Welthungerhilfe (WHH). The project aims to strengthen sustainable livelihoods, improve food security, and enhance the economic resilience of women, youth, and vulnerable households affected by conflict in North Darfur. The project focuses on building inclusive agricultural systems by improving access to productive inputs, strengthening farmer organizations, promoting climate-smart agriculture, expanding financial inclusion, and advancing gender equality through locally led development approaches. Key interventions include: - Identifying, training, and equipping community-based agricultural advisors (Last Mile Agents) to improve farmers' access to quality agricultural services. - Establishing and strengthening farmer cooperatives to increase agricultural production, collective marketing, and sustainable income generation. - Supporting cooperatives with access to small agricultural technologies and mechanization while promoting climate-smart farming practices. - Organizing Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) and delivering financial literacy, business planning, and loan management training to improve household financial resilience. - Building the capacity of village advisors, gender advocates, and community leaders to promote gender equality, social inclusion, and women's economic empowerment. - Conducting community awareness campaigns and local networking initiatives that strengthen inclusive participation and locally led agricultural development. Through these integrated interventions, the SALWA project seeks to improve household food security, diversify income opportunities, strengthen community institutions, and enhance the capacity of local organizations to deliver sustainable and inclusive agricultural development. The project contributes to long-term resilience by ensuring that women, youth, and marginalized groups play a leading role in community decision-making and economic recovery.
